I create this article because today I want to add translation text in a music video. I search some information from the internet about it. What I want is a free and simple application. Then I find some steps to create and embed subtitle into a video. First, you create SubRip (.srt) file using an application named Subtitle Workshop. Then you can embed it using another application. The simplest way is by using Freemake Video Converter but if you want more advance you can use VirtualDub.
Using Subtitle Workshop is so easy and simple. Anyway, it's better if you use some shortcut keyboard keys when you work on this application like ALT+C and ALT+V to set the start and end time of a subtitle. When you have finished this step you will have SubRip (.srt) file. At this time you have been able to watch your video with the subtitle on a media player like Windows Media Player, VLC, etc. But, if you want to embed your subtitle in your video you can go to the next step.
Subtitle Workshop
Like its name, basically Freemake Video Converter is a video converter application. But, it has a feature to add subtitle into video that will be converted. What you need to do just choose the video then choose the subtitle that had been created by Subtitle Workshop.
Freemake Video Converter
If you need better subtitle quality, you can use VirtualDub. It's an open source application. Like some of other open source applications, it's not user friendly in the installation process, you need download VirtualDub and additional program which is needed separately. The steps are as follows.
- Download VirtualDub. You don't need installation process. You can run VirtualDub.exe after download was completed.
- Add Subtitle Plugin to VirtualDub.
- Download SRT to SSA Converter. VirtualDub doesn't accept SRT file so you must convert the subtitle file that had been created by Subtitle Workshop before. With this application you can configure the text position, font color, etc.
- Last, you add the video and the SSA file into VirtualDub then run the compression process. You can adjust video and compression properties before.
For more detail instructions and steps about how to use VirtualDub, you can learn from this site.
